I found this twisted alder crook buried in fallen trees, and knew I just had to carve it into a ladle. When you "follow the wood grain" you never know what you are going to get. It turned into quite a Wild Thang! The grain of the wood runs through this ladle from the bowl to the top of the handle, making it very strong and durable. The alder wood has been roasted to give it the dark color. I chip carved its name into the handle and appointed the top with a decorative finial, just for fun.
The ladle is 16" in length. The bowl is 4 1/2" long and 2" wide. I have scooped out the bowl to hold a small amount of liquid, while leaving plenty of wood for strength. The bowl is approximately 1/4" thick, and very sturdy. The point has been left chunky to provide strength for scraping the corners of baking dishes etc.
Despite its crookedness, this ladle feels pretty good in the hands, left or right. I think it would be a fun piece to break out at a potluck for serving up pasta salads or rice dishes. It will reach deep into a dutch oven or crock pot. It will get comments and make smiles!
Carved without use of machinery or sandpaper, the spoon has a traditional whittled knife finish. I do not use templates to shape the spoons. Each one is designed while carving, and each one is unique.
Wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry with a cloth. Hand wash only for years of enjoyment.
